In 1940 the 160-acre Knapp property was purchased by Francis Holden, a close friend of the famous opera singer Lotte Lehmann.

Knapp's Castle was rumored to be under development in recent years and I avoided going there. It is probably at least a dozen years since I tried to go in. On Saturday there were quite a few visitors and no signs saying to keep out. But, sure enough, the place was under major re-construction.

George Owen Knapp, founder of Union Carbide, built Knapp's Castle shortly after purchasing the 160-acre (0.65 km 2) parcel in 1916. The location was so secluded that a new road had to be built to reach it. In 1940, Frances Holden bought the property and invited her friend, world-famous opera singer Lotte Lehmann, to move in.

Four years later, construction of the mountain lodge at San Marcos was finally completed, but in 1940, the home burned to the ground in a wildfire. Knapp had sold it for $10,000 just five weeks before the conflagration. The hilltop residence included five bedrooms, a kitchen and dining room, a pipe organ room and an observatory for stargazing.

Hello. Knapp's Castle was built by Union Carbide founder George Owen Knapp. Knapp purchased the land in 1916, and the "castle" was built over the course of four years. There were seven buildings, all made from sandstone blocks.

Looks like new construction. When we visited in April of 2019, there appears to be plenty of recent construction going on. As of this writing, Knapp’s Castle is still open to the public. Possible changes to the ruins in the future, so visit while you can.
