Kensington Palace is a very nice older (1600s) building with royal history, and is open to the public year-round. It has some nice changing exhibits. It is not on my list of top 25 places to see in London. Buckingham Palace is a gorgeous and elegant, working palace, and currently lived in by the Queen when she’s in London.

It is only open for a few weeks in the summer/fall when the Queen is vacationing in Scotland. Kensington has more stairs. Kensington is not nearly as grand or historic as Buckingham so, if open, I would chose Buckingham. We walked into Kensington last Fall without any pretickets.

Its popularity has greatly increased in recent years because of Princess Diana who lived here. I just checked the prices for each royal residence & found that: Buckingham = 17GBP. Kensington = 12GBP. Windsor = 60GBP (this is a day trip tour including Bath & Stonehenge, but i can get a cheaper price for Bath & Stonehenge only if Windsor is not a must see).
