  • Chambord Castle was built into its modern form in the early 16th century under the rule of François I and with the influence of Leonardo da Vinci. Chambord is the largest château in the Loire Valley; it was built to serve as a hunting lodge for Francis I, who maintained his royal residences at the Château de Blois and Amboise. The original design of the Château de Chambord is attributed to Italian architect Domenico da Cortona ; Leonardo da Vinci may also have been involved or influenced the design.

In 1519, Château de Chambord was the site of major renovations begun by the sovereign whose aim was to construct glorious castles that reflected his victories in battle. Neglected Castles The Loire Valley and its castles were unfortunately left to abandon by French royalty who preferred to establish their principal residence in Fontainebleau, at the Louvre Palace, and then later at Versailles.

The Chateau de Chambord is one of the finest works of architecture of the Renaissance period. Building of the castle began in 1519 and was completed in 1559; the castle was built at the request of Kings Francis I and Henry II. Currently, the Chambord castle is owned by the French state. The main designer of the Chambord Castle is the French king.

Indeed, Loire county is full of wild animals and forests. While some castles were official King’s residence such as Blois, Amboise or Chambord which was the official hunting domain, others were actually built by King’s relatives or ministers to make sure they would be close to power and decision-making. For example, Chenonceau belongs to his favourite concubine, Azay le Rideau was built by the treasurer and some others by ministers.

There is plenty of choice of castles in this region. And for the most part, they are sumptuous Renaissance palaces. But among them all, my absolute favourite is the Château de Chambord. Chambord castle in the Loire Valley. Built between 1519 and 1547 by king Francis I, this hunting lodge stands out with an unmistakable silhouette.

One of the most amazing facts about the Château de Chambord is that this massive castle was never intended to become the king’s residence, who used the Châteaux de Blois and Amboise instead. He commissioned the château with the sole purpose to become his hunting lodge.

The Château de Chambord was originally built as a hunting lodge for King Francis I in 1519, but over time it blossomed into the largest chateau in the Loire Valley even though it was never truly finished.

Chateau Chambord was merely a vacation home; a hunting lodge. Surrounded by a 20 mile stone wall enclosing a forest filled with wild game Chambord was the ideal escape for kings of old. The clean renaissance architecture of the chateau with the inspiration of Leonardo da Vinci makes the chateau stand out among the castles of the Loire region.

The last stop of the day was the hunting lodge of Francis I. Chambord castle, built to be a representation of the power and wealth of the King. The bus dropped us off less than an hour before closing, therefore all the tourists were leaving the castle.
