A highly decorated U.S. Army Lieutenant General, court martialed and sentenced for insubordination, challenges the prison commandant, a colonel, over his treatment of the prisoners. After mobilizing the inmates, the former general leads an uprising aiming to seize control of the prison.

Three-star General Irwin, a renowned military tactician, has been court-martialed and sentenced to a maximum security military prison run with an iron fist by its warden, Colonel Winter. Winter can't help but respect the once-legendary general, but that respect turns to hostility as Irwin defiantly confronts the warden on his methods.

If an officer is relieved (fired) from one of those positions, he reverts to 2-star by operation of law unless awaiting retirement (and then only for 60 days). Irwin was court-martialed, so the Army certainly wouldn't keep him in a 3-star slot. They'd relieve him and he'd go to court-martial as a 2-star. See 10 USC 601.

A rousing, action-packed ending with a patriotic finish overcomes some predictable plot points in THE LAST CASTLE. The movie stars Robert Redford and James Gandolfini of the popular but violent HBO-TV drama, THE SOPRANOS, as a court-martialed general and the warden of a military prison who lock horns in a battle of wills.

The Last Castle | 2001 | R | - 2.6.7. In the tradition of prison melodramas, The Last Castle is very much a men’s world. To enrich the yarn (which doesn’t work) and humanize Irwin, the scripters throw in a subplot that depicts him as an errant father, now aiming to make up for years of neglecting his daughter (played by the uncredited Robin Penn Wright) and his grandson, whose photo he keeps in his cell.
