The Eltz Castle was put under siege and possible capture and was bombarded with catapults by the Archbishop of the Diocese of Trier. A small siege castle, Trutzeltz Castle, was built on a rocky outcrop on the hillside above the castle, which can still be seen today as a few ruined walls outside of the northern side of the castle. The siege lasted for two years, but ended only when the free imperial knights had given up their imperial freedom.

Eltz Castle was erected in a strategically important position: It was built along a trade route that linked the Moselle River – historically one of the most important trade routes in the German Empire – with the Eifel and the fertile Maifeld.

The House of Eltz is a notable German noble family of ancient origin, who built the castle around the year 1157 and have ever since been the residents of Burg Eltz. Built as a Ganerbenburg, meaning it was intended to house several noble families, Eltz Castle is today owned by a community of heirs. Eltz Castle (Burg Eltz)-Germany, June 16, 2017:

Eltz castle (Burg Eltz in German) is an authentic medieval castle that survived the centuries. Its unique setting on an oval rock in the Elzbach valley, surrounded by woodlands and the little stream (on three sides), gives the castle a fairytale and magic appearance. Due to its location, the castle could not be expanded horizontally.

Eltz castle was created on the road that was frequented by Romans, and was built on a 70m high rock hill that is surrounded by Elzbach River on three of its sides. It was built there in the 12th century with the cooperation of three local lords, who have gathered a substantial amount of money for its construction. These historical families (Kempenich, Rubenach, and Rodendorf) are still owning this castle, with 33 generations of them being in charge of its upkeep and renovations.

It’s a little hard to make out, but you can see that Burg Eltz is on a small, rocky precipice. It’s surrounded by a horseshoe of river. Castles were used to protect trade routes; but, in addition, they could be used by nobles as a base to collect taxes and tithes from passing merchants.

The castle sits between Koblenz and Trier in the Rhine Valley of Germany and was originally built on a popular trade route. This is one of the few castles in the area that was never destroyed, despite the numerous battles that went on around it. This was due to the many alliances the family had built around the area and across Europe.

History Of Burg Eltz This medieval castle was built in the 12th century and has been owned by the same family for over 850 years. The castle was named after the stream Eltzbach, which in old German Els/Else is the name for Black Alder a tree that is found along the river.

The Eltz Castle stands on a prominent rock deep within the wooded Eltzbach valley, like a fairytale idyll. It is one of the numerous castle around the Moselle Valley in Germany. It’s not very far from the Cochem Castle which we visited on the same day. The Eltz Castle has never been destroyed in battle.
