Trakai Peninsula Castle is one of the castles in Trakai, Lithuania. It is located on a peninsula between southern Lake Galvė and Lake Luka. Built around 1350–1377 by Kęstutis, Duke of Trakai, it was an important defensive structure protecting Trakai and Vilnius, capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, against attacks of the Teutonic Knights.

The construction of Trakai Island Castle was related to the expansion and strengthening of the Trakai Peninsula Castle. Kęstutis moved his main residence and his treasury to the Island Castle. The castle suffered major devastation during an attack by the Teutonic Knights in 1377.

It was considered a masterpiece of medieval defensive architecture, and it was the only castle built on water in Eastern Europe. Trakai Island Castle was home to all the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. Later, Zygmunt II Augustbroke the tradition when he built a palace in Vilnius, at the bottom of Gediminas Hill. 1951 saw the start of large-scale research works on the territory of the castle, and Trakai History Museum moved in to the restored palace in 1962.

Trakai was a medieval capital of Lithuania, and it still retains its historic charm. Visitors to Trakai may enjoy one of the town's festivals, which include recognition of its history. Because Trakai was built in the midst of three lakes, waterside walks and picnics can be enjoyed, as well as recreational activities on the water.

One of the best known is about the origin of historical castle. It says that Trakai Island Castle was built as a sweet present for beloved Kestutis wife. He fell in love with gorgeous priestess from pagan region aside the Baltic Sea. The Grand Duke Kestutis married that charming girl named Birute and settled in the Castle of Old Trakai.

Trakai had become an important defensive centre close to the major grand-ducal residence of Vilnius. A unified defensive system was built in Trakai, which was difficult to approach because of its natural defences of wood- and lake land.

The castle was built in the 14th Century and restored to its original state in the 19th Century before it was eventually opened to tourists. The best part of Trakai Island Castle is that it is extremely close to Vilnius, so you can easily see it on a day trip from Lithuania’s capital city.

Trakai Island Castle dates back to the 14th century, when it was constructed by the rulers of Lithuania as a part of a defensive system designed to protect Vilmius from the encroachments of the Teutonic Knights. This system of fortifications also included the older Trakai Peninsula Castle, which is now largely a ruin.
