Definitely planning on stopping at Eilean Donan on our trip up to Skye. Everyone seems to be in agreement that the outside is picturesque and not to be missed but I seem to be finding mixed reviews on whether or not it is worth it to go inside. I'd appreciate hearing the opinions of the forum! Thanks everyone!

We stopped twice at Eileen Donan; first time on our way from Glencoe to Skye and when we returned from the NC500 we made a nice scenic detour and enjoyed the castle and the scenery one more time. Two hours drive later we met a German couple driving up from Edinburgh.

Driving Route to Skye – take time, make a day of it. A driving route to Skye from Edinburgh (or Glasgow) should include Glencoe and Glen Shiel on the way. Make a day of it – lots to see en route including Eilean Donan Castle. (And yes, we prefer heading for the Great Glen via Rannoch Moor, not via the A9 and Dalwhinnie etc.)

My wife and I are visiting England and Scotland in late May. We have about 4 days in Scotland, and had them planned out in Edinburgh, around Loch Awe, around Inverary, and around Loch Lomond.. Then my wife found this castle she is interested in visiting, Eilean Donan Castle, up near Ratagan. We'd take the A84, the A82 and then the A87.

It’s definitely worth going to see but even if the castle didn’t exist it would be worth going up to Dornie as the whole area is incredibly scenic. You can see more images of Dornie here. You can see how clear the loch water is from this photo I took of golden seaweed below the surface of the water.

As one of the most iconic images of Scotland, Eilean Donan is recognised all around the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish highlands.
